Tiba-tiba sebuah pertanyaan dikeluarkan oleh guru gw di suatu sesi belajar:

"Andra, do you mostly spend your money on people instead of something you can buy?"

"Yes. Mind if i know why did you ask?"

"Nothing important; Just my curiosity. It seems like you are that kind of person, are you not?"

Ya, gw adalah termasuk ke dalam golongan orang-orang yang murah hati untuk memberikan bantuan kepada orang lain. Sebuah perbuatan yang sangat baik. I sincerely enjoyed being nice. Hanya saja sifat gw ini tidak jarang menjadi senjata api yang meledak sebelum ditembakkan. Tidak jarang gw merasa kelelahan dan kesulitan karena cenderung untuk selalu menyanggupi apa yang orang lain inginkan untuk gw bantu. Walaupun begitu gw percaya dengan kelelahan dan kesulitan yang gw hadapi selama ini -- dan yang akan gw hadapi di masa depan -- akan membuahkan sebuah "balasan" yang setimpal. Satu pelajaran hidup yang telah lama gw budayakan dan akan selalu gw pertahankan; jangan pernah ragu untuk menjulurkan tangan.

To think or not to think

Pernah seseorang bercerita ke gw mengenai pilihan-pilihan yang sudah dibuatnya selama ini. Gw tergerak untuk mengabadikannya dengan menulis sebuah uraian pendek mengenai betapa "susahnya" kita untuk membuat suatu pilihan.

Trade-offs. Hal yang pasti kita temui ini memang kadang dapat menyerupai pisau bermata dua; menguntungkan dan merugikan. Kalau dalam dunia ekonomi, kita mengenal sebuah ide yang bernama opportunity cost. Ide itu membuat kita untuk dapat menganalisa suatu pilihan dan mengetahui pilihan manakah yang seharusnya kita ambil dengan "menghitung" pilihan mana yang membutuhkan pengorbanan lebih besar. Sebuah ide yang sangat jenius tetapi tidak sempurna. Pertanyaannya adalah: Apakah semua hal bisa dihitung?

Jika kita dihadapi dengan sebuah kondisi di mana kita harus memilih antara permen atau es krim, kita tentu akan bisa menjawab dengan mudah; dipengaruhi dengan tingkat preferensi kita kepada kedua makanan manis tersebut. Jika kita dihadapi dengan sebuah kondisi di mana kita harus memilih antara mandi atau tidur, kita juga masih bisa menjawab dengan mudah; dipengaruhi dengan tingkat urgensi atau prioritas pribadi kita terhadap kedua kegiatan tersebut. Kedua contoh kasus di atas termasuk ke dalam kategori pilihan yang harus dibuat dengan hanya mempertimbangkan beberapa hal saja; hal yang sifatnya kongkrit. Tetapi coba bayangkan ketika kita harus memilih, contoh mudahnya, teman atau keluarga. Umumnya kita akan mencoba mencari poin-poin yang harus dipertimbangkan untuk dapat memilih di antara kedua hal tersebut. Setelah itu, kita akan kembali ke konsep opportunity cost yang sebelumnya sudah gw sebut. Pertanyaan yang kemudian muncul adalah: Apakah itu sudah merupakan cara yang terbaik untuk menyelesaikan permasalahan ini? Apakah kedua opsi yang harus dipilih dapat dihitung?

Gw menjawab "Tidak". Kadang memang kita dihadapi dengan kenyataan yang dapat menggandakan denyut jantung, menyesakkan paru-paru, atau hampir menerobos batas kesabaran kita. Memilih adalah bukan sesuatu yang mudah dilakukan. Memang "menghitung" kadang dapat membantu kita menyelesaikan sebuah trade-off, tetapi tidak selalu berhasil. Terkadang, hanya perasaan yang dapat memberikan solusinya. You can call me cheesy but it is the truth.

This works in almost every kind of situations. When you have an assignment deadline; When you get bored of doing nothing; When you fall in love.

The Pre-Departure

Hello.

It hasn't been long since my last post, not in my world. Just so we all know, I'm moving to Malaysia this September. Yeah, that's barely two months away from today. Reason? I don't feel like explaining.. But we'll get to that later.

Anyway, I will resign from the University of Indonesia and continue my educational journey in KDU College. I will be taking the double honors degree in Business Management & Human Resource Management program, it's a twinning program offered by Keele University in UK. I will spend 3 years of study there.

A challenge. A huge one.

Well, of course doubtful thoughts are surrounding me in every single second of my life knowing that I have to leave my current life here in Jakarta. Phew.. This is all too sudden, believe me I know.

And I'll be several miles further to reach you..

I don't know whether this is the right decision for me to take, but I am sure it's the best for me. And so, i just can't wait until my departure. Doubts, excitements, heartbeats.

Anywhere I go, it goes nowhere but inside me.
